Description
The rise of right wing extremism and what this may mean for Ireland
Recent shootings incidents in New Zealand and the USA reinforce those who suggest there is an increase in right wing extremism across Europe and beyond. Such claims are supported by reports from the UK that 50% of referrals to the Prevent system now relate to right wing extremism. Interestingly, such assertions are less prevalent in the Irish context, with many quick to deny Ireland has a problem with Right Wing extremism. However, others argue the contrary, evidenced on their part by a perceived increase in hate crime against minority communities. It is these contrasting views that we are hoping to explore with our panels, who will speak about extremism and radicalisation from the right wing perspective, referencing specific examples that may have relevance in the Irish context, whilst also discussing whether there are trends and patterns that we should be aware of and monitor in the context of Ireland.
