Purpose and Objectives

The objective of this Course is to instruct nontechnical investigators in the skills needed to exploit digital technology to combat criminal activities, the proliferation of WMD, and the misuse of dual-use materials and technologies. For the purpose of this Course digital technology includes the Internet, digital media, communication devices, wireless technology, social media and other related technologies. Participants will learn about the current cyber environment and the technologies presently employed by cyber experts to further criminal investigations. In doing so, participants will be introduced to, and gain limited competency in, cutting-edge, open-source software and tools that help investigators analyze data from devices, digital media, or social networks. Participants will also be introduced to the realm of future technology, including the use of the Darknet, botnets/malware, and cryptocurrencies.
