Extended Meeting on Water and Sanitation in the Western Balkans (RWG GAWB)

26 November 2025-27 November 2025 Budva

The Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education / Global Sanitation Graduate School (GSGS), is organising the Extended Meeting of the Regional Working Group on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (RWG GAWB) on the Water and Sanitation Sector.

The meeting aims to support the implementation of the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (GAWB) with a particular focus on water depollution and sanitation management in emergencies, as well as to address the shortage of professional capacity in the water and sanitation sector across the Western Balkans Six (WB6). The event will also provide important academic input to the development of the WB6 Roadmap for alignment with the EU Water Resilience Strategy, led by RCC.

The programme will focus on:

• Implementation of the GAWB depollution pillar with emphasis on water;

• Climate-resilient and city-wide inclusive sanitation approaches;

• Needs assessment and curriculum development for regional capacity-building;

• Programme definition, institutional arrangements and financing for future education and training initiatives in the WB6.

The meeting supports the broader capacity development initiative for the water and sanitation sector in the Western Balkans Six, led by GSGS in partnership with RCC and GIZ, aiming to establish short courses, professional diplomas, and a future regional Master’s Programme in water and sanitation management.

The event will gather representatives of WB6 institutions, members of the RWG GAWB, academia, and international partners.
